Obesity

Obesity is defined as the accumulation of extra fat in the body, which is not good for health. The extra fat can cause many vigorousness risks such as heart disease and diabetes.

There are different methods, which can tell if a person is obese, or not. But the experts mostly rely on BMI (majority mass index) of a person. According to BMI calculations, people whose BMI is more than 30 are obese and those with BMI in the range 25-29.9 are overweight. Grossness is increasing at an alarming pace. In the UK, one out of every five men suffers from this problem.

Obesity Causes

The genetic factors are many times guilty for obesity to some extent. But it mainly develops from lack of physical exercise, irregular eating habits, and indisposed food.

In today’s time, people are somewhat lazy and lead a very sedentary lifestyle. They embrace automobiles to regular walks. The increase in stress levels gives rise to sale of medicines like antidepressants. Intake of other public medications such as corticosteroids, and oral contraceptives can also greatly cause weight gain.

Obesity Treatments

Doctors recommend a diet chart and regular exercise to obese people. It can help lose additionally weight. But for people who are too obese, doctors even prescribe drug therapy.

Regular exercise proves very remarkable for obese people. Everyday our body needs calories for performing various tasks. When the intake of calories exceeds those, which are burnt, it stores up as cloying fat in the body. The regular exercise burns these extra calories and weight loss is the result. Doctors meander to drug therapy when the regular exercise and diet plan prove to be ineffective.

Major pharmaceutical industries are investing mountainous money in research and development of various new drugs. This has made possible the entry of latest drugs in the market such as Xenical and Acomplia. These are latest drugs, which show effective for treating obesity.

Xenical

Xenical is a prescription medication that can help considerably overweight and tubby people lose weight and manage lost weight. In clinical studies, people who took Xenical and a reduced-calorie slim with no more than 30% of calories from fat achieved significantly higher weight loss than people who were treated with diet alone.

Acomplia

Acomplia is a prescription slimming drug. In clinical trials, over a year, one third of patients lost 10% of their bodyweight, while exactly two thirds of patients on the trial lost over 5% bodyweight.

All these medications are effective but where one may work for others, it might not vocation for you and vice versa. All these medications may have side effects too and hence it best to leave the decision on a medical practitioner. He is the best yourself to judge, which medication will work safely and effectively for you and which will not.

Size is emerging as one of the most wide spread problems - not only in America but all over the world. Initially, it was reported that obesity is more common among people living in western the public. But nowadays obesity problem as extended its reach to eastern part of the world including counties like India, China, Japan and Australia to name a few. The vital factor responsible for this problem is globalization of most countries which includes opening of mouthwatering eating joints like McDonald’s, Tube and Pizza Hut.

All these eating joints dishes up brilliant food which tastes really good but at the same mores it is unhealthy for most people as it contains spices, oils and additives which are harmful for health. These things are worst for people who are portly and will aggravate their condition. These poor obese people get addicted to taste and smell of stuff which is dished up by these current eating joints. As a result they continue to visit these restaurants day after day to satisfy their appetite which refuses to cease until and unless they eat the same baloney which is served at their favorite eating joints.

What can be done in order to stop them from visiting these places which are most dangerous for their robustness? There seem to exist many solutions to resolve this situation but only one that is, consumption of diet pills is capable of producing the perfect results in lowest amount of time. Diet pills are capable of stopping obese people from binging on unhealthy food items by reducing their preference. Once their appetite is reduced they no longer feel the need to land up at their favorite eating joints.

Xenical is a idiosyncratic weight loss pill which reduces the amount of fat in the body of person in question. Thus, you can be free from the excess amount of weight which you gained by eating all the flavoursome and oily food items available in the world. Now you can shed all your unwanted fat within small amount of time using xenical mass loss pills.

An Indiana couple who topped the scales with a combined weight of more than 50 stones (700 pounds) have undergone weight-loss surgery - on the same day.

Lorie and Todd Richmond both had surgery last week at the University of Chicago medical centre.

After years of failed diets, Mrs Richmond, 31, who weighed 402 pounds, and her husband, who at 35 years old weighed 305 pounds, decided to undergo the radical surgery to slim down. He had gastric bypass, she had a duodenal switch.

Dr. Vivek Prachand performed both operations, the first time he has done so on a husband and wife on the same day.

The Richmonds, who live in a town 45 miles south of Chicago, met during their first year at university in 1995, but they went their separate ways and married other people.

They were only reunited in 2006, after she looked him up on MySpace. Six months later, they married. And just over two years after they were wed, the couple underwent weight-loss surgery. “It’s like starting a journey together,” Mrs Richmond told the Chicago Sun-Times. “For me, this is such an awesome thing to do.”

Can you Stick to an Atkins Diet?

News Flash! This ‘just in’ hot off the presses…

Researches now say that Atkins and other Lo-Carb diets do not help when it comes to staying thin. In a comparison between Lo-Carb, low fat and reduced calorie diets, all participants started to regain weight after six months, and by twelve months there was little difference between the groups. “There is no clear evidence that Atkins-style diets are better than any others for helping people stay slim, despite the popularity and apparent success of the Atkins diet,” says Professor Arne Astrup of RVA University in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Ok… so maybe this is a bit melodramatic, but it drives home a point. We are living in a world of dietary confusion, a Land of Oz and make-believe, where facts are hard to find and commercial diets aim to keep us in a confused state and distract us from the truth. This is just one of the many barriers that people face when trying to lose weight.

So how are we expected to deal with all this dietary misinformation? Here is a suggestion. Ignore the hype, find a safe and healthy diet that makes good common sense, and stay with the plan for life. While this might not seem like any great revelation, it‘s amazing how many dieters beat their heads against the wall struggling to lose weight, hoping that “this time” the results will be different. My friend, if this describes your experience with dieting, you are following the wrong plan and need to consider a different approach.

Think back for a moment about how many times you have heard that to lose weight you must be “disciplined” in your approach. Or to put it another way, to lose weight you must be willing to just give up eating your favorite foods (like ice cream) and dining at your favorite places (yes, those fast foods are definitely out of the question). If this ill-advice actually worked, The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics would no longer rank obesity as one of their leading health problems!!

Dean Ornish Diet, Is It For You?

The Dean Ornish diet plan became popular among heart patients for reversing heart disease. The Ornish diet is not just a diet but requires a complete lifestyle change. The plan includes meditation and exercise. The Dean Ornish diet is at the opposite end of the spectrum of the Atkins diet plan.

The diet does not really stress the amount of food you eat but rather the type of food. It is a low fat vegetarian diet plan. Basically you can eat all the vegetables you want with very limited amounts of non fat dairy and egg whites. Complex carbs are also okay and whole grains but no refined sugar, alcohol or junk foods are allowed. Less than 10% of your calories should come from fat, 20% protein and 70% carbs. Dr Ornish’s book is a must if you plan on following the Dean Ornish diet plan as it is filled with excellent recipes to keep you with in his guidlines.

Unlike Dr. Atkins plan the Dean Ornish diet gets positive feedback from most in the medical community. Limited studies have shown overall health benefits of his plan. No Dean Ornish diet review would be complete without mentioning stress management using meditation and exercise.

Typical Day on The Dean Ornish Diet Plan

Breakfast

    * Oatmeal cereal with raisins and skim milk
* 1/2 Grapefruit
* Green Teat

Lunch

    * Soup (tomato, lentil or other)
* Garden Salad
* Bread
* Fresh Fruit

Dinner

    * The Ornish diet includes some terrific pasta dishes for dinner like Eggplant Lasanga

Hits: This might be the perfect diet for the human body. Its a complete plan of living not just a diet.Misses: This is not at all a easy diet for the average person to stick to and one of the most restrictive.

By Andrew Stern

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Women who get pregnant after weight-loss surgery tend to be healthier and less likely to deliver a baby born with complications compared to obese women, researchers said on Tuesday.

An obese woman who has weight-loss, or bariatric, surgery also may increase her chances of getting pregnant in the first place by normalizing her menstrual cycles and hormone levels, the researchers found.

Obese women are more likely to have difficulty getting pregnnt, but after the surgery “there is some suggestion of increased fertility,” Dr. Melinda Maggard, a surgeon and researcher at the Rand Corp think tank in Santa Monica, California, said in a telephone interview.

Bariatric surgery alters the digestive system’s anatomy and reduces the volume of food that can be eaten and digested. The most common form is gastric bypass, which makes the stomach smaller and permits food to bypass part of the small intestine.

While lossing weight naturally is preferable, weight-loss surgery does reduce the risks of pregnancy-related problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure that can harm the mother and her newborn, said the RAND researchers who analyzed data from 75 earlier studies.

The risks of premature delivery, having a low birth wweight baby, or delivering an exceedingly large-bodied baby were reduced for women who had bariatric surgery compared to obese women, the report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association said.

In some cases, pregnancy-related risks after surgery were comparable to those for normal-weight women.

Bariatric procedures have surged in the past decade, with more than 200,000 performed last year in the United States. In the years 2002 to 2005 covered by the study, 150,000 U.S. women of child-bearing age underwent the surgery.

The study was requested by a group representing obstetricians and gynecologists.

A few women who had procedures that shrank the size of the stomach with bands or staples had the devices removed after they became pregnant — either because of discomfort or out of choice.

Others experienced pregnancy complications that likely were related to the surgery such as bowel obstructions, but overall maternal and infant deaths did not rise significantly.

Ideally, women should wait a year after the surgery to get pregnant to let their bodies adjust, but Maggard said some got pregnant earlier without problems.

Even overweight women not morbidly obese who are having difficulty getting pregnant might qualify for bariatric surgery if other weight-los efforts fail, but improving fertility ought not be the main reason to have the surgery, Maggard said.

A related concern after weight-loss surgery might be unplanned pregnancies, Maggard said, because their previous dose of oral contraceptives may not be absorbed adequately.

“They might consider barrier methods of birth control or other means,” she said.

Mississippi is in deep trouble. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the Magnolia State is in the grip of an epidemic: the epidemic of obesity. Across our state, the number of overweight and obese individuals is rapidly increasing. In fact, almost 66% of the population of Mississippi is overweight or obese, making Missisippi the nation’s least healthy state. Diabetes, stroke, and heart disease are endemic in Misissippi’s population, especially within ethnic groups prone to being overweight. And it’s not just adults — a recent study using a sample of African-American children in the rural town of Canton, Mississippi revealed that 46% were overweight or at risk of being so.

Obesity is the second most frequent cause of preventable death in the United States, and Mississippi natives are not alone in their fight. However, if not addressed, severe and morbid obesity often lead to a shortened life span because those who suffer from obesity face a significantly higher risk of diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
This epidemic cannot be allowed to rage unchecked. Mississipi cannot be allowed to remain the nation’s least healthy state. Something must be done.

Obesity is not simply a matter of losing weight, nor is it a character flaw. It is a disease caused by a disordered relationship with food. Losing weight is simple math: when a person takes in fewer calories each day than their body needs to function, the body begins to burn fat to stay alive, resulting in weight loss.

The difficulty comes in restricting caloric intake – the primal urge to eat when hungry is almost irresistible. And, for some, the pleasure of eating is a substitute for emotional satisfaction. Others are food addicts, plagued by a constant craving for something to eat, regardless of whether they are physically hungry.

The difficulty of losing weight often leads those with the disease to attempt self-treatment, including crazy diets, extreme exercise programs, or “magical” weight-loss pills. Some do lose weight by these methods — but most gain it back fast, and usually damage their health in the process.

No miracle cure for obesity exists. The only way to successfully treat the disease of obesity is through medical care, based upon a complete change in the patient’s lifestyle and eating habits. To beat obesity, our state residents must begin to eat healthier foods in smaller portions. Most people can accomplish this lifestyle change through education, counseling, and sheer willpower.

But for many, weight loss surgery is the only way they can break destructive lifelong habits.

About Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is performed under general anesthesia, usually laparoscopically. Its purpose is to physically limit the amount of food that the patient can eat by surgically altering his or her stomach or digestive tract. The alterations make it nearly impossible to overeat—at least initially—and cause the patient to take in fewer calories each day than he or she burns. Consequently, the patient loses weight safely, and relatively rapidly.

Weught loss surgery, however, is not magic. Only a complete change in a patient’s lifestyle can cure the disease. Patients who fail to follow postoperative instructions may regain any weight lost. Those considering bariatric surgery as an option for the management of obesity should discuss their options with their physician prior to making a decision.

Mississippi can win the war on obesity. We can send some other, lesser state to the bottom of the healthy-states list. By changing our diet and lifestyle – and by using weight loss sergery as a weapon of last resort – we can beat obesity here, and make things better in this state we all love.

Mercy Medical Center has become the first hospital on Long Island to offer a new single-incision Lap-Band(r) (laparoscopic gastric banding) procedure for weight loss surgery.

A team headed by Shawn Garber, MD, Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Mercy, with colleague Spencer Holover, MD, is among the first in the nation to utilize the innovative technique, known as Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), for gastric banding, using just one small opening in the abdomen, through the navel, rather than the five incisions required in traditional techniques.

“SILS is an important new option that holds the potential of less pain, fewer scars and quicker recovery,” explained Dr. Garber, who heads the New York Bariatric Group. “And most patients report that they can barely notice the single incision hidden in the belly button.”

In addition to its latest application in gastric banding for weight-loss, Dr. Garber utilizes the SILS technique for gall bladder surgery.

Dr. Garber is the only bariatric surgeon included in Newsday’s listing of Top Doctors on Long Island, and Mercy Medical Center is top-ranked in weight-loss surgery. Mercy received the 2008 Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award(tm) from HealthGrades(r), the nation’s leading independent healthcare ratings organization, and is a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designated the American Society For Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Mercy’s Bariatric Center offers both Laparoscopic Banding (Adjustable Gastric Band) and Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (also referred to as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) which is considered the “Gold Standard” of modern obesity surgery. Both procedures are performed using state-of-the-art laparoscopic techniques with smaller incisions, less post-surgery pain, less time in the hospital, and a faster recovery.

Mercy offers monthly education and informational presentations for individuals who are contemplating bariatric surgery. For more information contact Mercy Medical Center at: 516-62-MERCY. Or visit on line at: www.MercyMedicalCenter.info
Nutrition Not Another Resolution: Nutrition for You launches its New Year’s Weight Loss Challenge

Advanced online weight management service Nutrition for You and Nu4You.net announces its New Year’s Weight Loss Challenge. The event is a healthy, structured and goal-oriented alternative to unsuccessful New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. Participants in the Challenge can lose weight and win prizes using the science-based service created by registered dietitian Manuel Villacorta, MS, RD, CSSD and his team.

San Francisco, Calif. (PRWEB) November 28, 2008 — Nutrition for You, the advanced online weight-management service founded by nutrition expert Manuel Villacorta MS, RD, CSSD has announced the launch of its New Year’s Weight Loss Challenge. “The New Year is upon us and many of us make the same old resolution to lose weight but fail to keep the promises,” says Villacorta. “We are offering an alternative and effective way to achieve weight loss goals successfully. It’s not another diet or not another gym membership. It’s proper nutrition and not another resolution.”

Nutrition for You provides a comprehensive weight management plan and powerful online toolkit created by nutrition experts that is free of fads, gimmicks, advertisements and product endorsements. Dennis Allio, co-founder of Nutrition for You, who lost over 55 pounds two years ago, had this to say about the effectiveness of the program,

“Members that follow our nutrition program have great success. In a recent Challenge 100% of the participants who finished lost weight. The typical weight loss was between 1.5 and 3 pounds per week. This is healthy sustainable weight loss. The Weight Loss Challenge adds additional community support to the participants reinforcing the website tools and expert phone-based nutrition coaching.”

Manuel Villacorta, a registered dietitian with years of clinical expertise in the weight-loss field points out that the Weight Loss Challenge is about more than just losing weight.

“Percent weight loss is only a portion of the total challenge requirements that include eating breakfast daily, keeping a food diary, meeting regularly with a trained nutrition coach, exercise and eating a low fat diet.

When it comes to weight loss, the biggest hurdle that people face is that of getting started. They just don’t have any idea of where to start from! If you are one of these people then this article is for you! It doesn’t really matter whether you want to lose ten or hundred pounds, the tips I am going to share with you in this article are going to help you anyway!

The first step to successful weight loss is to set some goals. Goals should be used in the same way as milestones are used on highways. Just as without any milestone, you will have no idea of where you are going, without a goal, you will have no idea of how much work you need to do to shed all the extra pounds!

First you should ask yourself some questions:

1. How much weight you want to lose?

2. By when you expect to lose all the weight?

Then write answers to these questions on a sheet of paper. Oh yeah, before I forget, let me tell you that writing your goals is one of the surefire ways of making sure that you never forget them! Write your weight loss goals on a piece of paper, make copies of that paper, and stick each paper on every place you can.

Make sure you don’t forget to stick this paper on your refrigerator and kitchen, since it is in these places that the demon called temptation tries to ruin your weight loss efforts!

Setting goals is just not enough; in order to make the goals achievable, you must set REALISTIC goals. If you have a goal of losing sixty pounds within a couple of weeks or a month, that is not going to happen. Setting such unrealistic goals for yourself will nullify the very effect of goal setting.

When you set unrealistic goals and fail to achieve the same, you will be disappointed and frustrated with yourself and your weight loss efforts.

Ideally, no matter what you do, you would be able to lose no more than 1-2 pounds per week. So create your goals accordingly. If you want to lose sixty pounds, it will take you at least six-seven months to achieve the same!

Set small and achievable goals for yourself so that when you achieve them, you will feel more confident to move forward. This is the biggest secret of successful weight loss!
